Lois Lane was a pretty regular Army daughter--
Okay, maybe she wasn't. Not many daughters of generals steal tanks on prom night for the entertainment value--no, no one will talk about that incident, so don't even try to ask.
Lois Lane was a pretty regular rebellious teenager when--
Even that isn't entirely fair. Far from irresponsible, she'd all but raised her younger sister--but deliberately blew off her classes because she was never supposed to be the 'smart one,' according to family status. (Besides, most rebellious teenagers don't steal army tanks for prom.)
Lois Lane was never entirely normal, but at least her universe was. It was full of regular-people concerns, and regular-people goals, and regular-people family problems, regular-people recurring nightmares about a guy in a red cape, and the occasional fortune teller leaving cryptic comments about her future with a flying man in tights (which, by the way, convinced her all fortune tellers do acid, because she would seriously never fall for a pilot with a penchant for Lederhosen).
And then, in 2004, she got word that her cousin Chloe Sullivan had died in a 'gas leak explosion.'
Like hell.
It was the work of a moment to resolve on her course of action, even with only a video message left for one 'Clark Kent' to give her any place to start. Chloe was the one with Aspirations to Greatness in Journalism; Lucy was the one with the Brains; her dad was the one with Success; her mom was the Tragic One. Family, steadiness, sanity: all those happened to other people, really. All Lois had was an unrelenting drive to find out the truth about what happened to her cousin, and bring her killer to justice. If she had to take down one or both Luthors, so be it. And so, on her way to Metropolis University for college, she stopped to look for Clark Kent, this farm boy her cousin had trusted and loved so much, in the little town that Chloe had lived and died in. After all, what could possibly happen on a late-night drive through stalks of something (was that what corn looked like?) out near Hicksville, Middle-of-Nowhere County?
Lois Lane was never quite what anyone could rightfully call 'normal,' but she'd never felt like that person who leaves a mark on the world.
She just needed Smallville first.
