Lois Joanne Lane, Investigative Reporter
[Smallville canon]

General Information

Name: Lois Joanne Lane
Nicknames: ‘Mad Dog’Lane
Date of birth: October 22, 1986

Psychology

IQ: More clever and witty than book smart, but still dangerously intelligent.
Phobias/Fears: Being alone, helpless, hopeless;
Religious Beliefs: Nominally Christian, functionally agnostic.
Intolerances/Annoyances: Injustice, greed, ignorance.
Quirks/Habits: Messy, likes eighties rock. Can’t cook worth a damn. Tends to be unpredictable of temperament and talks a lot, especially when nervous. Has an addiction to coffee and maple donuts. Allergic to dogs and cats. Bossy, loud, brassy to cover her insecurities.

Powers/Abilities: A knack for getting into trouble which frankly verges on the supernatural; nose for investigative journalism. Third-degree black belt in karate and a serious knack for picking locks. Realistically she also knows her way around firearms.

Family

Parents: Ella (deceased) and General Sam Lane
Sibling: Lucy Lane
Spouse/Serious Lover: Clark Kent - fiancé
Children: None
Relatives: Chloe Sullivan (cousin); Martha Kent (not-quite-mother-in-law); Conner Kent (not-exactly-nephew-shaped-thing); Henry James Olsen, deceased (cousin-in-law); Oliver Queen (cousin-in-law)
Family History: The Lanes are a highly military family, reaching back several generations. Lois grew up moving from base to base, although Lucy—always the academically more driven and gifted—wound up at boarding school. Ella Lane died when Lois was quite young of lung cancer; Lois functionally raised her younger sister for a time.

Present Background

Occupation: Reporter for the Daily Planet, recently promoted out of the basement.
Activities: Investigation, writing stories and editorials
Home: Recently moved into a studio apartment in Metropolis with Clark, from the Kent farm, where she lived with him after her place in the Talon was blown up. She was at the Talon for some years; before that, she lived at the Kent farm..
Finance: Middle-class
Personal History:
Lois Joanne Lane never really had a home until she was nineteen. She moved from army base to army base, following her dad, the three-star general Samuel Lane. At first it wasn’t so bad—as much of a workaholic as he was, his wife Ella kept him somewhat steady. However, Ella had smoked for years, and not long after Lois’ baby sister Lucy was born, Ella Lane died of lung cancer. Sam was more devastated than he ever admitted and threw himself even further into his military calling.

As a result, from the age of six the Lanes had a family ‘chain of command,’ with Lucy reporting to Lois and Lois reporting to their father. Lucy rather resented her sister for doing this, despite simultaneously looking to her sister for the only guidance and mother-like protection she had. Then, too, Lois was too busy taking care of herself and Lucy to have fun outside of school while still keeping up with work—and in an act of rebellion against being the perfect model, she slacked off on her work. Chloe (her cousin, to whom she is frankly closer than to Lucy) has commented that if Lois had put as much effort into schoolwork as she did into avoiding it she could have gone Ivy League, and it’s probably true. In the mean time, she is both proud and jealous of her baby sister’s academic accomplishments.

Lois got into Metropolis University by the skin of her teeth—but just before starting there, her cousin Chloe went into witness protection due to some work she’d done on the Luthors and promptly ‘died in a gas leak.’ Lois didn’t believe it for a minute and went investigating. Her hunt brought her to Smallville, and eventually to her first steady home in the form of the Kent Farm, and the closest to a loving family in Jonathan and Martha Kent, whom she loves as second parents, and their son Clark, who…

Well. He was definitely not an adopted brother.

After years of craziness around Smallville and relationships going up and down and all over the place, finally the world has reached a new status quo, as of May 13th, 2011. It was supposed to be her wedding day. But they'll get back to that eventually; there's way too much going on now to worry about it.

Appearance

Height: 5'7"
Eyes: Dark hazel
Hair: Dark
Defining Marks: None that I can think of
Dress Style: Casual dress slacks or skirts and frequently colorful button-down shirts; occasionally sports a snazzy waistcoat as well. She has a slightly dressier suit or two for top-notch interviews and the occasional killer dress. Sometimes her investigations lead her into situations requiring alternate dress styles, too. Off work hours, she wears jeans and tee-shirts, sometimes comfortably ratty ones, often tank tops. Oh, and stealing her boyfriend's plaid shirts is a frequent occurrence off-hours.

Romantic

Marital Status: Very engaged (frankly, married in all but name)
Past Relationships: Wes Keenan, Oliver Queen, probably unmentioned others
Not-quite-Relationships: Arthur Curry, Graham Garrett, Sebastian Kane, John Corben
Present Relationships: Clark Kent

Canon:

pre-Smallville through Season Ten: Canon.

Post-canon:
Immediately post-Finale: Perry flies in, gets into the city the day after Finale goes down. Lois drops the eyewitness report and interview with the president on his lap.
She needs to get around to a certain famous interview, though...
